| COPENHAGEN |
Though there is evidence that Copenhagen existed as a settlement over 6,000 years ago, its first written record did not come until 1043.
At this time Copenhagen, then called simply Havn (harbour), was of little strategic or political importance but consisted merely of a small group of wattle and daub huts located between the present day Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square) and the sea. The occupation of the population consisted mainly of fishing the plentiful herring in Øresund, the narrow stretch of water separating Denmark and Sweden.
Gradually, however, the town began to grow in significance because of its en route position between the royal seat in Roskilde (west of Copenhagen) and the religious centre of the Cathedral of Lund in southern Sweden, an area that was also full of trading posts. It should be remembered that at this time southern Sweden was part of the Danish kingdom.
With its rich history full of historical buildings and ancient streets, its outstanding museums and galleries, the uniquely enchanting Tivoli Gardens and a resident monarchy that is the oldest in the world, the Danish capital has a host of attractions to suit all tastes.
But this is no living museum. Copenhagen is a vibrant, modern city whose fascinating past coexists with the very latest trends in architecture, design and fashion. This is, after all, one of the world's great design capitals, a status that is reflected in its dynamic new buildings and stunning shops.
You will soon discover that one of the great joys of Copenhagen is its compact size, which means that most of its main sights and attractions can be seen on foot.
The sheer density of attractions within the city means that organised tours are often a good way to make the most of a short visit and there are plenty of walking, boat, bicycle and bus tours to choose from.
Furthermore, outside the city dozens of other sights and attractions await you.
And, of course, do not forget to pay a visit to Copenhagen's most famous daughter, the Little Mermaid who lives just a short walk from the city centre by the sea at Langelinie.
